Hallway Bathroom

Updated: Jun 30, 2020

Finding unique ways to add more value to a home is something we love doing! We knew when we bought this house we'd have to find a way to add a bathroom or two to not only increase the value of the home and allow us to get rid of the PMI (private mortgage insurance) on our mortgage but also, who can live with only one bathroom?! While in quarantine I can't tell you how many times we've both had to go to the bathroom at the same time, the new bathroom couldn't be done soon enough!

We brainstormed for what feels like months about how to fit an extra bathroom in the hallway. Initially we really wanted the doorway to be on the end where the shower is so that the master bathroom could be the existing bathroom. But after researching tankless toilets and measuring the space it wasn't in the cards. We began mocking up a layout for the bathroom and started thinking of ways to make the hallway the master bath and that's when the mirror door idea came into play! Mood boarding for projects is a fun way to give us inspiration and discover new ideas. We refer back to it often throughout the project.

Our thought was if the door was a mirror the wow factor would be much higher than if a regular door was there, instead of 'oh, you crammed a bathroom in here', you'd open the mirror door and think 'wow, there's a whole bathroom behind here!'. Maybe we're crazy but that's how our thought process works. We found a skinny vanity that would allow for plenty of space to get in and out of the shower and added skinny shelves that would fit rolled up towels perfectly. We're suckers for live edge anything right now so we're going to add live edge shelves above the toilet for additional storage space.

Board and batten is our new favorite thing, we did shiplap in our last house so we wanted to get creative with board and batten! After the statement wall in the nursery we were obsessed, so we went with horizontal board and batten in the new bathroom. Theo will do anything to avoid mudding so he's always game for shiplap and board and batten options. It just takes a lot of math and precision to get it right but once you get that down it's quick and easy! We plan to use board and batten in our stairwell to the basement and throughout the entire basement when we decide to tackle that beast of a project.

From one project always stems a second, third, and fourth so once the bathroom is done we plan to do a master bedroom makeover that will include adding doors to our exposed Ikea closet, getting rid of a door to nowhere, creating shelves and a tv alcove, building a barn door for the basement stairs, and fixing up the hallway shelving.

We'll update this post as we continue finishing the hallway bathroom so stay tuned for updates! Links below:
